World Congresses targeting professionals in education and training

26th World Congress for Early Childhood Education

The 26th World Congress for Early Childhood Education will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on August 11-13, 2010.

The theme of the congress is "Children - citizens in a challenged world". The congress comprises three strands: Education for Sustainable Development; Gender equality and equal rights; and Different childhoods.

Organiser of the World Congress is OMEP, the World Organization for Early Childhood Education. OMEP is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organisation concerned with all aspects of early childhood education and care (ECEC). The organization is currently established in over 60 countries and is represented at meetings of UNESCO, UNICEF, and other international organisations with similar aims.

The foundation for the event rests on UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs aim, among other things, to give all children the right to be in school by 2015, to improve women's situation and to ensure gender equity.

14th World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCESS)

The 14th World Council of Comparative Education Societies will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on 14-18 June 2010.

The title of the congress is “Bordering, Re-bordering and New possibilities in Education and Society”. The conference includes 14 thematic groups, which will address the issues of bordering in an international perspective from their specific thematic vantage point:

-Educational Governance, Policy Within and Across Borders
-Comparative Education: Rethinking Theory and Method
-Education, Conflict and Transitions Within and Between Societies
-Demystifying Quality in Education
-Re-imagining Curriculum
-Critical Perspectives in Teacher Education and Development

-New Technologies and Accessibility to Learning
-Education and Children's Rights in a "Globali" World
-Education, Politics of Dominance, the Suppressed and Disappearing Languages

-Cross-Thematic Groups (Special Interest Groups / Special Workshops / Symposia / Round table)

The congress is organised by the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES), which was established in 1970. Its specific goals are to promote the study of comparative and international education throughout the world and enhance the academic status of this field; and, to bring comparative education to bear on the major educational problems of the day by fostering co-operative action by specialists from different parts of the world.

5th World Summit on Media for Children and Youth

The 5th World Summit on Media for Children and Youth will be held in Karlstad, Sweden on June 14-18, 2010.

The theme of World Summit Karlstad 2010 is "Challenges in young people’s world of communication". This wide area is divided into five strands with the following perspectives: Communication for change; Children and young people’s education and development; Children and young people’s digital content creation; Economics, policies and law; and, Ethics and social responsibilities.

World Summits are held every three years and provide a forum for producers, broadcasters and regulators of media for children and other professionals and community leaders committed to the improvement of quality media for children.

The objectives of the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth are:
* To achieve a greater understanding of developments in children’s media around the world.
* To raise the status of children’s media.
* To draw to the attention of key players in broadcasting the importance of issues relating to children.
* To promote a charter of guiding principles in children’s media.
* To ensure the provision of programs for children will be guaranteed as the communication revolution proceeds.
* To assist in the developing world to provide opportunities for quality children’s media in the future.
