Differences between the academic results of girls and boys

At the Conference on Gender Differences in Educational Achievement, to be held in Uppsala, Sweden on 17–18 November 2009, differences between the academic results of girls and boys will be discussed. Studies reveal similar patterns of gender difference in most European countries. The conference is part of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union.

A new European comparative study on gender and educational achievement will be presented at the conference. The report will describe the situation in different countries regarding gender differences and gender equality in schools, higher education and teacher education. It will report on the problem areas, the political measures taken and examples of best practice found in the Member States. Further questions to be discussed at the conference include anti-plug culture in relation to segregation and marginalisation, the connection between choice of education and employment, teachers’ role, and factors that contribute to better results for pupils concerning for example mathematics and literacy.

The conference will deal with gender differences in educational outcomes in the final years of compulsory school (in Sweden school years 7–9), upper secondary school, higher education and adult education.

Participants at the conference will include decision makers, researchers and international organisations from across Europe.
