2011 to be the European Year of Volunteering

The European Commission has decided to propose that 2011 be designated the "European Year of Volunteering". The Council is expected to endorse this decision, after the European Parliament has been consulted, by the beginning of next year.

A new project management publication called “Survival Kit. Managing Multilateral Projects in the Lifelong Learning Programme” has been released. Many educators who got involved and sometimes entangled in EU-funded projects have felt the need for tailor-made project management support in their endeavour.

Traditional stereotypes remain the biggest challenge for gender equality in education

On June 7th 2010 the European Commission presented a new study which examines how gender inequality in education is addressed in European countries. It shows that gender differences persist in both choice of study and outcomes. The Commission study is based on the work the Eurydice network, which collects and analyses data on education systems. The study covers 29 countries (all EU Member States except Bulgaria, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).

Comenius Regio Contact Seminar in Estonia

The Centre for Educational Programmes in Estonia organises a Comenius Regio Contact seminar in Tallinn, Estonia on 30 September to 3 October 2010. The third edition of the European Conference “ICT for Language Learning” will take place in Florence on 11 - 12 November 2010. The aim of the conference is to promote and share good practice and transnational cooperation in the field of the application of ICT to language learning and training.

New EU policy handbook on teacher training

The European Commission has just published a handbook for policy-makers who wish to provide better support to new teachers during their first years in the profession. Teacher education experts from EU countries have worked with the Commission to produce this practical guide which leads policy-makers step-by-step towards implementing induction programmes for beginning teachers.
