The Altsolem House: An online community for language learning

The ILLIMITED Project (Implementing Language Learning Materials to Increase Teachers Education Development), co-financed by the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, has developed an easy-to-use, flexible, and inexpensive e- and m-learning software for national language training in workplace settings. Its name is Altsolem House.

European Conference on New Technologies for Language Learning

The second edition of the European Conference “ICT for Language Learning” will take place in Florence, Italy, on 6-7 November, 2009. The aim of the conference is to promote and share good practice and transnational cooperation in the field of the application of ICT to language learning and training.

The conference is also an excellent opportunity for the presentation of previous and current language learning projects funded by the European Commission and by other sources.

INSPIRE: Classroom materials on climate change and renewable energy

The INSPIRE project is to create synergies and links between out-of-school places of learning and curricular learning, thus improving the base of knowledge of European pupils on matters related to education for sustainable development. Now the project has developed 15 lesson units for primary and secondary schools about the topics ‘climate change’ and ‘renewable energy’. The hands-on education material is useful for teachers at school but also for informal education and learning at out of school learning places.

Michelangelo: European Fine Arts Portal

The aim of the Michelangelo project is to provide art teachers and art students in secondary schools with an overview of European fine arts.

On the Michelangelo Portal art teachers and students find information on the most representative artists and artworks of five European countries in the last ten centuries. A search can be made choosing either the national criteria and/or to historical period criteria. On the Michelangelo Portal the Artist and Artworks section gives access to an alphabetical list of European artists and artworks.

IMMILABOUR: Interactive language learning courses for living and working abroad

Targeting the needs of immigrants, the EU project IMMILABOUR has produced an interactive, web based multimedia language learning course specially designed for improving listening and speaking skills. For free one can learn English, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian in fourteen lessons including animations, interactive exercises, and by listening, repeating and playing games. Also a multimedia and interactive CD-ROM with the training course is available.

3rd European Fair for Education for Sustainable Development

Further to the success of the 1st European Environmental Education Fair in 1996 and the 2nd European Fair in 2006, the 3rd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development will be held in Hamburg, Germany, on 28-30 October 2009 under the title “Renewable Energy and Climate Change: Thematic challenges for schools and universities”.

StrangerFestival: Europe’s biggest event for young video makers

StrangerFestival is an extraordinary initiative where young people in short videos tell the world what really matters to them. It is Europe’s biggest event for young video makers and fans. The collection of videos is simply a treasure and thousands of young people produce their stories. The 2nd StrangerFestival will take place this year in Amsterdam on 14-17 October 2009.

TACCLE book and European course on e-learning

TACCLE is a Comenius multilateral project about learning management systems and e-learning in education. The TACCLE project helps teachers to develop their own e-learning materials. Now the project has published a book, which is a step by step guidance in a teacher friendly ‘how-to-do-it’ handbook (PDF), and invites to an in-service training course in April 2010.

EU as Global Actor

The Swedish International Programme Office for Education and Training invites to a European conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The conference, free of charge, is an international event in association with the Swedish Presidency of the European Union. The conference will be held in the Lund, Sweden on 28-29 September 2009 with the title ‘EU as Global Actor – meeting global challenges through creativity and innovation in local education’.
